In December, the K22 Economic Law students of the NTT Institute of International Education (NIIE) participated in two remarkable mock trials focused on Civil Contract Disputes and Disputes over Savings, Debt, and Social Contributions. These trials allowed students to apply their legal knowledge to real-life situations, fully experience a trial, and develop essential skills such as analysis, argumentation, and problem-solving.
A Realistic Reenactment of Courtroom Proceedings
Mock Trial 1: Civil Contract Dispute
The first mock trial reenacted a civil contract dispute over a property purchase deposit. The plaintiff sued the defendant for failing to honor the deposit agreement and seeking a refund and damages. The case was complex, involving various legal points such as fault, violations, and the parties’ responsibilities. NIIE Economic Law students, taking on roles as judges, lawyers, and parties involved, made arguments based on the legal system, evidence, and contract terms, delivering a compelling and professional trial.
Mock Trial 2: Disputes over Savings, Debt Group.
The second mock trial focused on financial disputes related to savings, debt groups – a familiar yet challenging issue in civil law. In this case, the plaintiff demanded that the defendant returnthe money they had contributed to a savings group, which had not been paid back as promised. NIIE’s “legal scholars” applied the law to analyse the details, clarify the legal responsibilities of the parties, and recreate a vivid, realistic, and reasonable courtroom trial.
The Significance of Mock Trials
Through these mock trials, students not only learned how to apply the law but also experienced the entire legal process, from case preparation to debate and verdict. This activity also helped develop soft skills like critical thinking, teamwork, and time management.
For international students studying at NIIE, the mock trial was an opportunity to gain deeper insights into the Vietnamese legal system, laying a solid foundation for their future studies and careers.
These two mock trials were not just a “test” of skills but also an important bridge between theory and practice. Through these activities, students gained a deeper understanding of how law is applied in real life. They also discovered their passions and career interests, providing clearer direction for their future roles in the legal field.
The lessons learned from the mock trials will be invaluable, boosting students’ confidence as they embark on the path to becoming responsible and resilient legal experts.
