GSE – NIIE Teacher’s Training: “Global Scale of English in The Classroom” – Speaker: Ms. Nur Ozge Kaya, Learning Consultant Manager, MEA.

As part of the collaboration between NTT International Education Institute (NIIE) and Pearson, on April 24th, the English faculty of NIIE participated in a training session organized by Pearson with the theme “Global Scale of English (GSE) in The Classroom.” The session aimed to provide a deeper understanding of the GSE framework and its application in designing curricula and utilizing Pearson’s academic resources.

The Global Scale of English (GSE) is a tool for assessing language proficiency. GSE allows learners to accurately gauge their current language level, set appropriate learning goals, and create a tailored learning path, thereby boosting their confidence. The GSE scores can be converted to equivalent scores in other testing systems such as CEFR, TOEFL, and IELTS.

Focusing on three main topics: How good is my English? What progress have I made towards my learning goal? What do I need to do next to improve? Ms. Nur Ozge Kaya provided solutions and quick assessments to determine students’ proficiency levels according to the GSE framework. This forms the basis for developing curricula, learning materials, and teaching methods tailored to each level. Additionally, as students at different levels have varying needs and motivations, alongside material solutions, Ms. Nur Ozge Kaya also shared ways to inspire learners, helping them to take an active role in their learning journey and progressively achieve their goals. The speaker also introduced the exclusive Pearson tool – the GSE Teacher Toolkit, which helps plan curricula, lessons, learning materials, and assessments according to GSE levels, covering Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Academic Skills. After each assessment, this tool provides comments and evaluations, helping both instructors and students identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas needing improvement for necessary adjustments, optimizing individual learning experiences.
