On November, 2024, freshmen from the Administrative Services course at the NTT Institute of International Education (NIIE) – Nguyen Tat Thanh University enjoyed an exciting and meaningful field trip to Nguyen Van Binh Book Street and the Central Post Office of Ho Chi Minh City. Guided by Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh, the trip is not only a refreshing change of scenery from the classroom but also a valuable opportunity for students to practice essential skills for their future careers.
During the trip, students will be divided into groups and engage in challenges focused on communication, problem-solving, and teamwork. These activities are designed to encourage students to creatively apply their knowledge in real-world contexts. Initially, each group will approach and interview four visitors—two Vietnamese and two international guests—to learn about their reasons for visiting Book Street, their reading habits, and the role of email communication in their work. The requirement to interact with international visitors provides an excellent opportunity for freshmen to practice English in a practical setting, enhancing their language reflexes and building confidence in using English.
The next activity involves a book-finding challenge. Groups will be tasked with locating a book that meets specific criteria set by their lecturer, all within a limited time frame. This activity helps students develop focus (deep work), time management, and effective collaboration skills.
In addition, students will test their communication and persuasion skills through a sales activity. Each group will strive to sell two books and two souvenirs at Book Street, a real-life experience that requires confidence and adaptability in social interactions. Lastly, groups will select a book to read and summarize its content through a mind map on A0 paper, showcasing their reading comprehension, analytical thinking, and ability to convey information. These activities not only offer practical knowledge but also help students hone essential soft skills, preparing them for the workplace.
Through this field trip, students will cultivate crucial skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving—indispensable assets in any professional setting. Notably, this is also an opportunity to improve English proficiency, breaking through the “fear of speaking” and fostering natural language reflexes. With the spirit of play-based learning, the activities not only provide students with moments of relaxation and stress relief but also boost their self-confidence, deepen their passion for their field of study, and inspire them to achieve a 6.5 IELTS target.
