On September 25, the NTT Institute of International Education (NIIE) successfully organized the orientation program for new students in the Information Technology (IT) department. Notably, this year saw a significant participation of international students from Laos, marking yet another step forward in NIIE’s efforts towards educational internationalization.
Before the program officially started, Dr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Vice President of Nguyễn Tất Thành University and Director of NIIE, had a warm meeting with the Laotian students. During this session, he gave a brief introduction to the Institute and shared valuable experiences on studying and working abroad. The international students also had the opportunity to express their thoughts, aspirations, and challenges, receiving timely support and advice. This ensured that any initial cultural and environmental barriers would gradually turn into enriching and “worthwhile” experiences during their time at NIIE. The NIIE leadership also reassured the students that the Institute is always ready to support them in both academic and daily life matters, helping them feel more secure and confident as they embark on their study journey.
The official program began with the honor of welcoming:
- Dr. Tran Son Hai, Head of the Information Technology Department at NIIE
- Mr. Huynh Nguyen Khac Huy, Deputy Director of Hinova, and an expert in the IT field.
Both speakers, with years of experience in both academia and the industry, provided deep insights and useful advice about the IT field, helping students better understand the discipline they are pursuing and offering clearer guidance on their future career paths.
In his address, Dr. Tran Son Hai congratulated the new students on successfully passing their high school exams. However, he cautioned against adopting a “relaxed” mindset and becoming complacent in their studies during the first few years of university. While these early years largely involve foundational theory, they play an extremely important role in building a solid base, serving as a “launchpad” for students to accelerate in their later years and their careers post-graduation.
He also provided a detailed introduction to the IT program, the training pathway, and the expected outcomes for IT students at NIIE. He advised students to create a clear study plan and continuously update their knowledge, as IT is a field that evolves at a “blistering pace.” Standing still means falling behind. With the advantage of English proficiency, NIIE students will be able to access international knowledge resources, broaden their professional perspectives, and open up many opportunities to work in global environments. Dr. Hai emphasized the importance of focusing on English, not only because it is the main language in programming but also because it opens doors to research and development opportunities in the field.
From a business leader’s perspective, Mr. Huynh Nguyen Khac Huy, Deputy Director of Hinova, provided a highly realistic view of the IT industry in both Vietnam and internationally. He shared that IT is not only a rapidly growing field but also faces a severe workforce shortage. Vietnam is expected to lack between 150,000 to 200,000 IT professionals each year during the 2023-2025 period.
Mr. Huy also addressed common concerns from students, particularly the question, “Is a degree important?” According to him, a degree is an important factor for employers when screening candidates, especially when combined with soft skills and foreign language proficiency. Additionally, he provided detailed statistics on IT salaries, showing that positions in the field offer very attractive incomes.
Not only did Mr. Khac Huy analyze the current state of the IT industry, but he also revealed potential future technology trends, including:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning
- Cloud Computing
- Internet of Things (IoT)
- Big Data Analytics
These technologies are opening up numerous job opportunities for IT students. Mr. Huy advised students to define their career path clearly from their first years of university. This is crucial because once you identify your area of specialization, you can focus deeply and master one specific field without being distracted by other directions. In addition, honing soft skills such as critical thinking, teamwork, and time management are also key factors in helping students succeed in the IT industry.
Details about the 4-year program have been shared, and the opportunity to explore oneself has opened up. Even better, K24 students have their international peers by their side, along with the dedicated support of young and dynamic academic advisors. So why hesitate to give your all to your passion? Wishing all new students of K24 a beautiful youth and a strong foundation during your studies at NIIE!
